The leader as a role model during the yearly performance process
Many of you are already engaged in end year process of evaluating employees progress of performance and behavior. Practically speaking, this conversation may differ from organisation to organisation. In some organisations, you choose to have both topics – performance and behavior – during the same process. In other organisations they focus on performance, incl. annual goals during this time of year. And then thet postphone the evaluatin of personal development for a later process.
As leaders we are role models. We must walk the talk.
I have a thought that I would like to share with you.
Can you imagine that we as leaders openly share what we have "received" from our leader? Obviously, there are certain information that cannot or should not be shared due to sensitive personal information.
But what if we chose to share the following:
- How have we as a leader performed overall in relation to goal? Some companies divide in % for example 90-120% will be characterized as average or solid performer.
- Our strengths
- Our development areas
I think it will send a strong signal. That the leader is not flawless. The leader is just like another employee in the organisation. That we dare to show what we are good at and what we are not good at. That we are vulnerable like all other people.
What do you think about this?
